Maybe your boss has asked you to sign a COVID-19 liability waiver and you’re wondering if that’s a good idea.
It’s not, says Remington A. Gregg, a lawyer at Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group. “You are giving up your right to hold a bad actor accountable in court if you sign away your rights,” he said.
Many businesses —and even President Trump’s reelection campaign — have implemented this type of waiver during the pandemic. At a June Trump political rally, attendees were asked to waive their right to sue if they contracted COVID-19.
If you are asked to sign a waiver, you should first ask the business or organization what they are doing to keep in compliance with the state’s health rules that will prevent you and others from getting COVID-19 in their establishment.
“You are the one that has to pay the hospital bills, you are the one that has to deal with the loved one who is gone. All this (waivers) does is pass the risk to you,” Gregg said.
