FDA Warns About False Positive COVID-19 Antigen Tests

Be wary of the results of your COVID-19 antigen tests, especially if you used a SARS-CoV-2 rapid detection test. The FDA is warning that false positive results may occur when users do not follow the instructions for the use of the rapid detection antigen tests.

The warning came after reports of false positive results from the tests used in nursing homes. One of the companies making the tests, Becton Dickinson, which is supplying 750,000 antigen tests to the U.S. government, said in September it is investigating nursing homes’ claims that its rapid coronavirus testing equipment is producing false-positive results.

Antigen tests detect proteins on the surface of the virus and require an uncomfortable nasal or throat swab. The FDA issued the first emergency use authorization (EUA) for a COVID-19 antigen test in May. There are federal agreements with several companies to supply antigen tests to U.S. nursing homes.
