Common Household Products Could Be Harmful to Your Children

Using common household products to clean floors, do the laundry or even bathe could have a detrimental effect on your child’s gut health. An unhealthy gut microbiome may affect the immune system and nutrient absorption, and has been associated with obesity and diseases such as dementia and asthma.

According to a study published in Environmental Science and Technology Letters, researchers discovered a connection between the levels of bacteria and fungi in the intestinal tract of toddlers and preschoolers and the amount of common chemicals kept in their home.

The study showed that semi-volatile organic compounds found in children’s intestinal tracts included phthalates used in detergents, personal care products such as soap, hair spray and shampoo and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which are used in stain- and water-repellent fabrics, coatings for carpets and furniture, nonstick cooking products and more.

Researchers noted that while many people are exposed daily to chemicals in the air and dust in their homes, young children are especially at risk because they tend to ingest the chemicals by crawling on floors or putting objects in their mouths.

The study involved 69 toddlers and preschoolers, with researchers studying the children's gut microbiomes through blood, urine and fecal samples.
