A new wearable device currently under development has the potential to warn the wearers of the device if they are infected with the coronavirus. A remote-monitoring startup company has the go-ahead from the U.S. Army to develop a wearable monitor that detects COVID-19 symptoms and also monitors heart rate, respiratory rate, skin temperature, body position, coughing or even the person’s gait, according to MedCity News.

BioIntelliSense and Royal Philips received funding received a $2.8 million award from the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command to test wearables to identify COVID-19 cases before symptoms appear, according to MedCity News.

BioIntelliSense partnered with UC Health in Colorado in early 2020 for use of the wearable monitors in surgery and postoperative care.

If successful, the technology could be used to maximize military preparedness and have a benefit for the general population, said Cmdr. Christopher Steele, director of the USAMRDC’s military operational medicine research program.
