Eggs as a First Food for Babies Enhances Brain Development

The choline in eggs is so important for human brain development that the new U.S. dietary guidelines for babies now include eggs as a suggested first food for babies. The guidelines specifically recommend eggs as an important first food for infants and toddlers, as well as for pregnant women and lactating moms.

Choline, a nutrient plentiful in eggs, is essential for healthy brain development. Introducing eggs into a baby’s diet (between 4 and 6 months of age and when a baby is developmentally ready) can reduce the risk for an egg allergy.

One large egg provides the daily choline needed for babies and toddlers, and two large eggs provide more than half of daily choline needs for pregnant moms.

Because of the protein and choline they provide, eggs can be beneficial for all ages, including teens and older adults, according to the report. In addition to enhanced brain health, eggs also support bone health and are a natural source of vitamin D.
