The first 3-D printout of a lab-grown “steak” has debuted in Israel. The culture used live animal tissue to create the rib-eye.
This steak is different from previous lab-grown “meats” in that it’s the first one to use actual animal tissue. Other alternative protein sources thus far have been plant-based. For those who would rather eat something else, cell-based, lab-grown seafood products are just around the corner: A company in San Diego plans to unveil their products later in 2021.
Other lab-based meat alternative companies also hope to throw their concoctions in the fryer, too, with methods that include the use of meat tissues from both live and slaughtered animals.
The new steak is designed to allow its cells to grow similarly to traditional cow tissue, which ultimately helps it look more like a “real” steak. The Washington Post said it isn’t clear whether the USDA will allow the lab-grown meats to be called meat.
