The University of Oxford said that while there are no safety concerns in the children’s trials of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccinations, they are stopping the trials for now while they study the blood clotting reactions that have occurred in some adults who had the vaccine.
The children’s trial was launched in February to study the safety and efficacy of the AstraZeneca in children as young as 6. The first-of-its-kind study involved 300 volunteers, with 240 to receive the vaccine while 60 would receive a meningitis shot.
In a statement released by the University of Oxford, officials said that while there are no safety concerns in the pediatric clinical trial, researchers are awaiting “additional information from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency on its review of rare cases of thrombosis/thrombocytopaenia that have been reported in adults, before giving any further vaccinations in the trial.”
