A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that only 3 in 10 parents plan to have their children vaccinated against COVID-19 immediately; more than 25% said they want to wait on children’s clinical trials are completed before making that decision. A Yahoo poll in April had similar results: 39% of parents said they will have their children vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as they’re eligible; 37% said they will not get their kids vaccinated and; 24% said they're unsure if they will.
May 10, 2021, the FDA approved the use of Pfizer’s 2-dose COVID-19 vaccine to children 12- to 15 years old. The FDA and Pfizer both stressed that the vaccine is safe for children in this age group and will help make schools safer in the fall; however, it's not mandatory that kids receive the vaccine before returning to school.
"I don’t think that we need to have that (Emergency Use Authorization) in order to have all schools operating as close to normal as possible," infectious disease expert Dr. Amesh A. Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told Yahoo Life. "Vaccinating this group makes it easier, though, and makes it easier to have extracurricular activities. It also removes one more roadblock."
