Massachusetts public health officials reported 716 new COVID-19 breakthrough cases in fully vaccinated individuals in one week, according to reports from the state’s Department of Public Health. There have been 5,166 cases of COVID-19 in fully vaccinated individuals as of July 17, up from 4,450 reported a week earlier, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which also reported 1,649 new COVID-19 cases during that same time frame.
Breakthrough cases account for 43.4% of all new COVID-19 cases, which are being blamed on the COVID-19 delta variant, which is twice as infectious as the original virus.
Public health officials issued a public health advisory asking people in Provincetown to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status, and asked some businesses to request proof of vaccination before allowing people to enter. Thirty-five cases of COVID-19 were traced to a cluster in Provincetown, where an overwhelming majority of people had been fully vaccinated, according to the city’s health department.
