A land-based agriculture company with a genetically engineered salmon farm in Indiana is coming to Ohio with a proposed 479,000 square-foot, similar facility.
Commercial stocking of salmon will begin in 2023, according to AquaBounty, which creates its GE salmon by modifying a gene that makes it grow faster than wild salmon. The company says the containment process is free from antibiotics and “other contaminants.”
The facility will be based in the village of Pioneer, population 1,419 as of 2021. Company officials said they plan to hire 100 employees.
