In another chapter of the revolving door between U.S. government offices and industry, the U.S. FDA’s chief of the office of science in the Center for Tobacco Products has taken a job with none other than Philip Morris.
According to The New York Times, Matt Holman will begin his new job immediately. At the FDA, Holman came to the division “to contribute to the improvement of public health and reduction of the death and disease associated with tobacco use,” according to an FDA bio on Holman dated May 1, 2020. He has served at the FDA for 20 years.
In a Q&A on his bio page, Holman said the highest priority for his office at that time was addressing the “epidemic among youth” of electronic cigarette devices, aka, e-cigarettes and vaping. Philip Morris manufactures e-cigarette products. Holman said his new job would include working on tobacco harm-reduction efforts. He also will be providing “input” on regulatory submissions.
