Study Reveals Toxic Chemicals in Tampons

A recent UC Berkeley study has found that tampons from various brands contain toxic metals, including lead, arsenic, and cadmium. Published in the journal Environment International, the study highlights potential health risks due to the high absorption capacity of vaginal skin and the widespread use of tampons.

Adding to the concern, a consumer study from Mamavation revealed that 22% of tested tampons contained PFAS "forever chemicals," known for their persistence in the environment and links to serious health effects. The study tested 23 tampon brands and found indications of PFAS in both organic and non-organic products.

Exposure to toxic metals and PFAS is associated with health issues such as dementia, infertility, cancer, and endocrine disruption. The findings underscore the urgent need for manufacturers to rigorously test and label menstrual products to ensure consumer safety. As research continues, consumers are advised to remain informed and cautious about the products they use.
