Bicycling to work can significantly enhance health and reduce the risk of early death, according to a study in BMJ Public Health. Researchers found that bike commuters have a 47% lower risk of premature death and are less likely to develop heart disease, cancer, and mental health issues. The study analyzed data from 5% of the Scottish population, linking commuting habits to health records from 2001 to 2018.
The findings revealed that cycling to work is associated with a 51% lower risk of dying from cancer and a 30% lower risk of needing heart medication. However, bike commuters were twice as likely to be hospitalized following traffic accidents, highlighting the need for better cycling infrastructure. Walking to work also showed health benefits, including an 11% lower risk of hospitalization for any reason and a 10% lower risk for heart disease-related admissions.
