Is Your Food Container Hiding a Health Threat?

A new study shows that chemicals in plastic containers could pose a serious risk to heart health. These chemicals, called phthalates, are found in many household items like food containers, shampoo, toys, and makeup. The study found that in 2018, one common phthalate (DEHP) may have contributed to over 360,000 heart-related deaths worldwide among adults ages 55 to 64.

Phthalates are known to disrupt hormones and trigger inflammation, both of which raise the risk of cardiovascular problems. They’ve also been linked to cancer, obesity, and issues with reproduction. Experts say that microwaving or washing plastic containers in hot water can release more of these chemicals into food.

To reduce your risk, opt for glass or stainless-steel containers when storing or reheating food. Choose unscented cleaning and personal care products. Wash your hands regularly and avoid plastic products marked with recycling codes 3, 6, or 7, as these are more likely to contain harmful chemicals.
