Black plastic items like spatulas, food trays, and kids’ toys may contain toxic flame retardants, according to a new study. These chemicals, once used in electronics, are turning up in everyday items because of poor recycling practices. One toy tested had nearly 3% flame retardants by weight. Even though some of these chemicals are banned in the U.S., researchers found them in 70% of the plastic samples.
The main chemical of concern, decaBDE, is linked to cancer, hormone issues, and developmental problems. It was banned in 2021 but is still showing up in items like black plastic food trays. These chemicals can enter your body through food, dust, or even kids mouthing plastic toys. Experts say there's no known safe level of exposure.
To lower your risk, switch to stainless steel or glass for cooking and food storage. Avoid heating food in black plastic containers and wash your hands often. Researchers say stronger laws are needed to stop harmful chemicals from getting into products in the first place.
