Could Where You Live Be Making You Sick? Study Ties Ocean Pollution to Disease

People living near U.S. coastlines polluted with microplastics may face higher risks for serious health issues, according to a new study. Researchers found increased rates of Type 2 diabetes, stroke and coronary artery disease in areas with the most plastic pollution.

The study looked at 152 coastal counties and found that residents in the most polluted regions had an 18% higher rate of diabetes, a 9% higher risk of stroke, and a 7% higher risk of heart disease. These areas had high levels of microplastics — tiny plastic particles found in the ocean, air, food and even tap water.

Experts believe chemicals in plastics, such as BPA and phthalates, may play a role. These substances can disrupt hormones and cause inflammation, which affects organs like the heart. While the study doesn’t prove that microplastics cause these conditions, it highlights the urgent need for more research — and stronger efforts to reduce plastic pollution.
