A new trade deal between the U.S. and the European Union could raise prices on brand-name medications. The deal, announced by President Trump, adds a 15% tariff on many goods from Europe, including prescription drugs. Experts say this could affect popular medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, which are made in Denmark.
Europe supplies many of the active ingredients used in brand-name drugs sold in the U.S. While these drugs make up only 10% of prescriptions, they account for about 80% of drug spending because they’re so expensive. Experts believe drugmakers may raise prices to make up for the new tariff, which means patients may end up paying more at the pharmacy.
Generic drugs likely won’t be affected. Most generics are made in countries like India and China, which aren’t part of this deal. But some experts warn that if tariffs are added to those countries later, prices on generic drugs could also rise.
