Heart attacks don’t always come with crushing chest pain — especially for women. Cardiologists warn that women often experience more subtle symptoms, such as jaw pain, upper back or shoulder pressure, fatigue, or stomach upset. Too often these signs are mistaken for stress or indigestion, delaying life-saving treatment.
Ignoring these signals can be deadly. Women face a higher risk of dying after a heart attack than men, in part because their symptoms are less typical and harder to recognize. Even tightness in the back or pressure around the shoulder blades may be a red flag that should never be dismissed.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women in the U.S. Experts stress the importance of managing risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, and excess weight. Most critical, however, is recognizing symptoms early and seeking immediate emergency care — even if it doesn’t feel like the “classic” heart attack seen in men.
