Drug-Resistant 'Nightmare Bacteria' Are Rising Fast in the US

Drug-resistant “nightmare bacteria” are spreading quickly across the United States, with infections up nearly 70% between 2019 and 2023, according to new CDC data. The steepest rise came from bacteria carrying the NDM gene, which makes them resistant to almost all available antibiotics. Even common infections like urinary tract infections could soon become much harder to treat.

The study found that carbapenem-resistant infections climbed to more than three cases per 100,000 people by 2023. Infections linked to the NDM gene jumped by 460%, now making up nearly half of the 4,300 cases tracked in 29 states. These infections are particularly concerning because only two IV drugs can fight them, and both are costly and not widely available.

Experts warn the true number of infections is likely much higher since many states don’t routinely test or report them. Heavy antibiotic use during the COVID-19 pandemic fueled resistance, making the problem worse. Without stronger monitoring, careful antibiotic use, and new treatments, once-routine infections could become chronic, life-threatening illnesses.
