Millions of Americans may be taking an opioid that does more harm than good. A new analysis found that tramadol, one of the most prescribed painkillers in the U.S., provides very little pain relief while doubling the risk of serious side effects, including heart problems. Once promoted as a safer alternative, researchers now say its benefits are overstated and its risks underestimated.
The study reviewed 19 clinical trials involving more than 6,500 adults with arthritis, fibromyalgia, or nerve pain. Results showed only minimal improvement in pain — not enough to make a real difference in daily life. Meanwhile, patients were twice as likely to experience major complications such as chest pain or heart failure, along with common side effects like nausea, dizziness, and constipation.
With over 16 million tramadol prescriptions written last year, experts say the findings raise major concerns amid the ongoing opioid crisis. Researchers concluded that the drug’s potential harms likely outweigh its limited benefits and urge doctors to consider safer alternatives for managing chronic pain.
