Brain-training programs are everywhere, but not all of them actually strengthen the mind. While crossword puzzles and word games may improve recall, new research shows that certain types of brain exercises may do much more — possibly slowing age-related cognitive decline.
In a recent clinical trial, older adults who played fast-paced games designed to improve attention and processing speed showed measurable boosts in acetylcholine, a key brain chemical that supports focus and memory. After 10 weeks of training, participants nearly reversed the typical decline in this neurotransmitter. Those who played slower, pattern-based games saw no improvement, suggesting speed and engagement may be key.
Experts say these findings add to growing evidence that dynamic mental challenges can help keep the brain healthy. Paired with good nutrition, exercise, quality sleep, and lifelong learning, targeted brain games could help preserve memory and focus well into older age.
