A new survey from the American Heart Association found that nearly 9 out of 10 adults in the U.S. have never heard of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome — a condition that connects heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, and obesity. Even more surprising, almost 90% of adults have at least one risk factor for it. Experts say CKM shows how these health issues are deeply connected and can worsen each other, raising the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.
Doctors diagnose CKM in stages, from 0 to 4. Stage 0 means no risk factors. Stage 1 starts with extra body fat. Stage 2 includes conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney disease. Stage 3 signals high cardiovascular risk, and Stage 4 involves advanced heart disease combined with metabolic and kidney problems. Because these issues often appear together, doctors say treating them one at a time no longer works. A whole-body approach that targets shared root causes is needed instead.
The good news is that simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Eating better, moving more, and maintaining a healthy weight can help lower the risk of CKM syndrome. With one in three Americans showing multiple risk factors, the American Heart Association hopes this new awareness will inspire more people to take charge of their health early — before problems begin.
