Most Gluten Sensitivity Might Have Nothing to Do with Gluten

A major new review is challenging long-held beliefs about gluten sensitivity. Researchers from the University of Melbourne and international partners found that for most people who think they’re sensitive to gluten, the real issue may lie in how the gut and brain communicate — not in gluten itself.

The analysis, published in The Lancet, revealed that symptoms such as bloating, fatigue, and gut pain are often triggered by other factors like fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs), compounds in wheat, or even psychological influences such as stress and expectation. Controlled trials showed that people with non-celiac gluten sensitivity reacted the same way to gluten as they did to placebos, suggesting the condition overlaps more with irritable bowel syndrome than with a true gluten disorder.

Experts say this could reshape how gluten sensitivity is diagnosed and treated. Instead of strict gluten-free diets, future approaches may include moderate dietary changes alongside stress reduction and gut–brain therapies. Researchers emphasize that gluten isn’t harmful for most people — and that improving gut and brain balance may be the real key to relief.
