Why the Holidays Can Increase Heart Risks

The holiday season often brings changes that can put extra strain on the heart. Travel, poor sleep, emotional stress and heavier meals can all raise the heart’s workload at the same time. Research shows that heart attacks and abnormal heart rhythms increase in late December, with some of the highest-risk days falling around major holidays.

One reason is a pattern known as “holiday heart syndrome.” This refers to heart rhythm problems triggered by overeating, alcohol, dehydration and stress. Large meals and salty foods can raise blood pressure, while alcohol can interfere with the heart’s electrical system. Cold weather can also narrow blood vessels, making the heart work harder and increasing the risk of complications.

The good news is that much of this risk can be reduced. Drinking enough water, eating and drinking in moderation, staying active and protecting sleep can help support heart health. Paying attention to warning signs and keeping basic health routines in place — even during celebrations — can lower the chance that holiday stress turns into a serious heart problem.
