The Simple Habit That Helps Improve Blood Sugar

A small new study suggests that natural daylight may help older adults with Type 2 diabetes keep their blood sugar more stable. Researchers followed 13 adults around age 70 and found that sitting near large windows helped participants stay in a healthy blood sugar range longer than when they were under standard indoor lighting. The study was published in Cell Metabolism.

Participants spent two separate periods in a controlled, office-like setting. They ate the same meals, followed the same activity routines, and stayed on their usual medications. When exposed to daylight, their blood sugar stayed in a normal range about half the time. Under artificial light, that number dropped to 43%. Average blood sugar levels were similar overall, but daylight reduced spikes and dips, helping levels stay steadier.

Experts say this does not replace core diabetes care like medication, diet, exercise, or glucose monitoring. The study was small, and the effects were modest. Still, spending time near a window or getting more daylight may be an easy, low-risk way to support blood sugar control, especially for people who spend most of their day indoors.
