It's a normal and common thing to switch doctors. Physicians are there to provide a service; if you’re not getting the service you think you need, go elsewhere -- particularly when your children’s health is at stake.
CNN suggests looking for the following 5 signs that it may be time to make a change:
1. You can't get a word in edgewise. As your child's advocate, your concerns need to be heard.
2. Your doctor doesn't follow through. If your pediatrician says they will do something and then doesn’t, it’s a sign the office is overwhelmed.
3. Your doctor is a pushover. A doctor who seems to have no medical opinions, but instead caves to your every request, may not have your child’s best interest in mind.
4. Your doctor rushes through a physical exam. The doctor should spend a good portion of the visit actually examining your child.
5. Your doctor is not board certified. Before you even make an appointment to interview a pediatrician, go to the American Board of Pediatrics website and use their Verification of Certification search tool.
In terms of how to find a better fit, try personalizing your questions to prospective doctors to reflect problems you've had in the past, so you know they won't be repeated in the future.
And, according to CNN:
“... [M]ost doctors' offices should be willing to transfer growth charts and vaccinations records at no charge to a new doctor's office. If the office's policy is to charge for anything more than that, have your new doctor's office request your child's files, which should then be provided to them for free.”
