Don’t walk on eggshells; eat them!

Eggshells can enhance the growth of new, strong bones needed in medical procedures, according to a study by a team of UMass Lowell researchers.

The technique used in the study could one day be applied to repair bones in patients with injuries due to aging, accidents, cancer and other diseases and to help grow cartilage, teeth and tendons.

Eggshells contain protein, magnesium, selenium, strontium and numerous other compounds to help augment your bones and joints. Consuming as little as a tablespoon of powdered eggshells a week may prevent you from having to take a calcium supplement.

Although calcium sources are readily available, calcium deficiencies are common. Symptoms of a calcium deficiency include fatigue, mood changes, muscle stiffness, spasms and lapses in memory.

Low calcium levels can bring about osteoporosis. Millions of people every year suffer from hip fractures, which can be life threatening — 20 percent of those who've suffered a hip fracture die within a year.

In addition to calcium, other studies have shown that daily probiotics, Vitamin K2, vitamin D and magnesium are known for preventing age-related bone loss and osteoporosis, as well as having a positive effect on bone and heart health.

You can get the calcium from eggshells by grinding them into a powder and putting a teaspoon in your food — smoothies are great for adding powdered eggshells — to give your calcium levels a quick boost, but preparing them correctly to eradicate bacteria is crucial.

Speaking of crucial, organic, free-range eggs are a must when making powdered eggshells. It is also important to retain the membrane — the ultrathin skin lining the shell.

Another source of valuable nutrients to strengthen your bones is bone broth.

Homemade, organic bone broth contains calcium, collagen and bone marrow and may help reduce joint pain and inflammation, promote strong bones and boost hair and nail growth.

To strengthen your bones, it doesn’t matter which came first — the chicken (bone broth) or the egg (shells). They’re both excellent sources of calcium and bone-building nutrients.
