Using a gas stove at home could raise your cancer risk, especially in smaller or poorly ventilated spaces. A new study found that gas stoves can release benzene, a chemical that causes cancer. This gas can travel throughout the home, accumulating in areas like bedrooms — even those far from the kitchen.
People who use their gas stove often and don’t open windows or use a good vent hood are most at risk. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their faster breathing rates and smaller body size. Even moderate stove use in tight spaces may increase the chance of leukemia, the study shows.
To reduce risk, researchers recommend switching to electric stoves, using high-efficiency vent hoods, and keeping windows open during cooking. These steps can help lower the risk, but they may not remove it completely. For the best protection, better ventilation and safer stove options are key.
